Locus of control
Locus of control is Julian Rotter's construct for how much people believe outcomes depend on their own actions (internal) versus external forces such as luck, fate or powerful others.
Internal locus predicts academic achievement, health-protective behaviour and lower learned helplessness. External locus can be protective in environments where outcomes genuinely are out of your control (chronic illness, repressive regimes).
