Self-Management
Self-Management is the second of Goleman's four EQ domains. It's what you do with emotions once you've noticed them — the regulation, impulse control and resilience that turn emotional awareness into useful behaviour.
What high scorers look like
High scorers stay composed under pressure, recover from setbacks within hours or days rather than weeks, and delay gratification when the stakes justify it. They're the calm presence in a crisis. At their edges, they can suppress rather than regulate, coming across as detached.
What low scorers look like
Low scorers react quickly to frustration, say things they regret, and let stress leak into their decisions. Most can dramatically improve with techniques like emotion-labelling, deliberate pauses, and physical reset routines.
Where it shows up in life
Self-Management overlaps heavily with Big Five Conscientiousness and predicts career advancement, relationship durability and long-term health outcomes.
