IQ & cognitive ability

General intelligence (g)

The g factor is the underlying general cognitive ability inferred from the fact that performance on almost any cognitive task correlates positively with performance on any other. IQ tests are designed to estimate g.

g is among the most robust findings in psychometrics — it replicates across tests, cultures and eras. It predicts academic and job performance but not wisdom, creativity on ill-structured problems, or ethical reasoning.
