RIASEC career type

Artistic (A)

Artistic is the RIASEC type for creative, expressive, unstructured work. Artistic people thrive in environments without strict rules, where originality and aesthetic judgement matter more than conformity.

What high scorers look like

Strong Artistic scorers work in writing, design, music, film, fine art, architecture and creative direction. They need creative freedom and flexible structure; tightly-prescribed roles drain them fast. At their edges, they can resist reasonable constraints and romanticise mess.

What low scorers look like

Low Artistic scorers prefer structure, clear metrics and defined outputs. They may still enjoy art — they just don't want to make a living producing it.

Where it shows up in life

Artistic correlates strongly with Big Five Openness and with choice of humanities and arts degrees. It's also the RIASEC type most resistant to being trained in — Artistic types rarely thrive in Conventional roles even with good pay.
