EQ domain

Relationship Management

Relationship Management is the fourth of Goleman's EQ domains. It's the outward-facing one: where self-awareness, self-regulation and empathy turn into influence, conflict resolution, and lasting relationships.

What high scorers look like

High scorers handle disagreements without damaging the relationship, give hard feedback with care, and rally people around shared goals. They build trust fast and keep it. At their edges, they can smooth over real tensions and take on too much emotional labour.

What low scorers look like

Low scorers avoid difficult conversations, let relationships drift or struggle to influence others even when they have the right answer. All three of these are learnable, usually in months rather than years.

Where it shows up in life

Relationship Management is the strongest EQ predictor of leadership effectiveness, team performance and career advancement into senior roles. It correlates with Big Five Extraversion but is not the same trait — introverts can score very high here.
