EQ domain

Social Awareness

Social Awareness is the third of Goleman's four EQ domains. It's the empathy layer: reading mood, picking up non-verbal cues, sensing what another person is experiencing even when you disagree with them.

What high scorers look like

High scorers walk into a room and know who had a bad morning. They read tone past words, notice when a friend is pretending to be fine, and understand why people feel what they feel. At their edges, they can absorb others' emotions as their own and over-care at their own expense.

What low scorers look like

Low scorers miss the cues. Not because they don't care — because the signal isn't coming through clearly. This is often trainable with deliberate observation practice and feedback.

Where it shows up in life

Social Awareness correlates with Big Five Agreeableness and with Social RIASEC career type. It predicts team cohesion, negotiation outcomes and care-work performance.
